How the instructor chooses to use the materials in this textbook is dependent on a number of factors: the instructor's preparedness or comfort level in speaking Russian, her on or his resourcefulness and spontaneity in expanding on student responses and remarks, and ultimately his or her sense of humor and willingness to engage in language play. The students' proficiency in Russian, of course, must also be considered. Here the materials provide a high degree of flexibility. If the class is performing at the intermediate or advanced intermediate level, the instructor may decide to assign all or most of the excercises as written homework before the students answer questions about the text orally or discuss it in the classroom. In the case of a highly motivated fourth year or graduate level class, the instructor may choose to go through the questions and пересказ drill orally in the classroom as "closed book" exercises, assigning only the окончания and translation excercises at the end of each chapter for written homework. But whatever the circumstances, most instructors will recognize that the textbook provides ample opportunity to drill the vocabulary and grammar in the reading texts and to generate discussion in Russian.
