This software was developed for Microsoft Windows 3.1, but it also works with Windows 95. Hundreds of users have enjoyed Cyrillic Support for Windows since its release in 1991. This software has now been updated to be fully compatible with both Windows 95 and 3.1, and to add TrueType fonts and conversion routines for reading Cyrillic files created on the Macintosh.
Cyrillic Support for Windows allows you to use Cyrillic text in almost all Microsoft Windows programs, e.g., in word processing documents, e-mail, spreadsheets, database records, Web pages, and multimedia authoring systems. In addition to the standard Roman letters and symbols found on any computer keyboard, you will be able to use a variety of other symbols.
Roman and Cyrillic letters can be mixed freely on the same page, and even on the same line.
Three keyboards layouts are included for typing Russian: AATSEEL standard, AATSEEL student (mnemonic), and Soviet. Russian accented vowels may be typed by using a "dead key" method or by assigning them to Alt+key combinations. Keyboard layouts are also included for typing Belarusian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian, and Ukrainian.
If you are a touch typist, you will be able to switch from English to Russian (or some other language) without taking your fingers off the keyboard. You may also change languages by choosing them from a menu.
The user may modify any of the keyboard layouts by moving some letters to different keys as convenient. Modifying a keyboard layout does not invalidate texts created with standard layouts. If you receive a file created by a colleague who uses a different keyboard layout with his or her copy of Cyrillic Support for Windows, the file will be perfectly readable on your computer. In fact, the file will be readable even if your colleague uses a different russifikator so long as it adheres to the standard Windows Cyrillic character coding scheme. And if your colleague uses a different standard, you should be able to convert the file using Cyrillic Central, a utility included with this software.
If you have Russian or Russian-and-English files created by a different program, such as the Soviet-made Lexicon, or WordPerfect for DOS with Cornell Russian Support or with Russian Language Module, or some Macintosh program that uses the Apple Cyrillic character coding, you will be able to convert these files to the Windows Cyrillic format and print or edit them.
For laser printers compatible with Hewlett Packard LaserJet Series II, IIP, III, etc. a set of bitmap Leed fonts (upright, italic, and bold, in portrait and landscape orientation) is included in this package. A smaller set of TrueType fonts is also included. These can be printed on laser printers as well as on ink jet and dot matrix printers.
The software requires Microsoft Windows version 3.1 or later, and a VGA (or better) display. About two megabytes of disk space are required for minimal installation; about three megabytes if all the bitmap fonts are installed.
